In this world of vanishing wilderness, EcoCamp invites you to explore remote Patagonia with the least ecological impact possible; to trek in virgin beech forests; to admire colossal calving glaciers; to think and wonder about humankind while standing at the foot of the towering granite peaks of the Torres del Paine; to sit in total silence under the Southern Cross, and to share a glass of wine with new friends on your Patagonia tour.

About EcoCamp
The basic premise of designing the EcoCamp was to maintain the nomadic spirit of the ancient inhabitants that moved along the dismembered coast looking for food and shelter. These people lived in harmony with Mother Nature and built their huts out of wood, furs and leathers, all organic materials they found on site.

In Patagonia, from Golfo de Penas to the Strait of Magellan, these natives were called Kawesqar or Alacalufes, sadly nowadays the few remaining pureblood Alacalufes are no more than 10 and live in the remote village of Puerto Eden.

Kawesqar people built their huts on a geodesic shape bending branches and covering the structure with guanaco and sea lion skins. When whale hunters and marines established bases on their domains they abandoned their traditional ways of shelter and adopted new materials
and construction patterns.

Patagonia EcoCamp design was inspired by the traditional Kawesqar hut resembling an igloo and a dome at the same time. The instinctive engineering ability of the Kawesqar can be easily understood these days. The semi-hemispherical structure of the EcoCamp domes is formed by a number of isosceles triangles that provide uniform distribution of the stress caused by severe wind loads. Wind speed in Patagonia often surpasses 160-180km per hour which makes traditional straight and flat walls extremely vulnerable if the structure is meant to be light. Another significant aspect is that rounded bodies minimize the external surface in contact with the cold environment allowing less exchange of temperature with the warm interiors. Finally, semi-hemisphere gave Kawesqars the maximum internal space in relation to the surface they had to cover with valuable and sometimes scarce animal skins.

Patagonia EcoCamp is a tribute to Kawesqar dwellings and way of life.

Patterns for Designing
The main concepts kept in mind when designing the EcoCamp were the following:
  • To be exposed to nature as in a camp tent but with the comfort and sophistication of a four-star hotel;
  • Design and build interfering as little as possible with the environment. The hotel is not meant to be seen. No one is interested in advertising EcoCamp on site
  • Take advantage of the sight. EcoCamp gives sight to the Torres del Paine granite pillars right from the dining room and from many dormitory domes
  • The nomadic spirit should be brought alive, let's make the hotel portable, so when moved, very little tracks of previous existence on site will be left;
  • EcoCamp allows the terrain to recover after each season, let the grass grow, the animals graze, the sun shines and the wind blows all over the place. The domes are removed each winter.
  • The wind is an active part of Patagonia, and it is important that guests experience it, so the canvas that covers the domes will react to the wind. You will be perfectly comfortable on the bed but aware that nature is outside knocking at the door;
  • The skies in Patagonia can be spectacular at night, and the domes let guests fall asleep looking at the stars above
  • Days in Patagonia are long from 5:30AM to 11PM and the best light for photographs is at dusk and dawn. The domes let the light flood the interior warning you that day is on. Grab your camera and get out to catch the first lights striking the mountains;
  • Travelers come this far to be outdoors, let's make the indoor amenities as little as possible;
  • The maximum capacity will be 30 guests so the feeling of intimacy, the idea of being in a Nomadic convoy will be kept even if the EcoCamp is full.
Construction and Energy Supply
EcoCamp has been constructed with intentional goals and objectives. Here are some examples of how EcoCamp has been designed with sustainability in mind:
  • Construct with what you have onsite and minimize the importation of materials that do not exist in the place.
  • Minimize the constructed area and leave indoors only the necessary places such as dormitories, living room, dining room, kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Geodesic domes, reminiscent of the Kawesqar hut, will be the basic building module. Animal skin coating should be replaced by sturdy clothing.
  • Avoid foundations. Terrain should be impacted as little as possible.
Energy Supply
In finding the proper sources of energies environmental design consider using the natural forces that are found on-site and that humanity has learned to use for its benefit. EcoCamp obtains all the energy from 100% natural & renewable sources like water, sun, and wind.
  • Solar energy has been widely used in Patagonia especially during our summer season when the days can have 17hrs of daylight. EcoCamp uses solar panels to provide energy for small fans on the toilettes chutes and to light the circulation areas.
  • Wind energy is still on an experimental stage in Patagonia, the lodge's experience with two generators has been diverse and the main difficulties reside in that the wind flows very irregularly with strong currents at certain hours and not a breeze in others. Nevertheless, they have been able to provide lighting for dormitories out of the wind generators.
  • EcoCamp uses propane for heating water in the bathrooms and for the kitchen stove.
  • Despite some investigators claim that the toxic emissions from a modern wood heater are similar to emissions from burning fossil fuels EcoCamp is considering the feasibility of using modern wood calderas to provide some sort of central heating and eventually modern wood stoves for cooking. In the vast plains of Patagonia, there is plenty of fallen dead wood that could be collected. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and by photosynthesis, release oxygen and store carbon in the wood. When wood is burned, the carbon dioxide is re-created and released into the atmosphere. This is the same amount of carbon dioxide that would be released should the tree die and rot on the forest floor. This is known as the "carbon cycle" and is environmentally neutral. The contra is that wood heaters generate four times the particulate emissions than oil combustion and ten or more times the particulate emissions than natural gas, though Particulate Pollution will never become a problem in windy Patagonia it is a matter of consideration.
Putting in practice the considerations described above results on the fact that we can provide our guests with very limited and discretional electrical power: No hairdryers, no battery recharge, no electrical shaving machines, no long showers, no internet, etc.

Passive heating & lighting:
The best way to preserve is with no doubt not to heat nor to light at all and keep up with the natural rhythm. Domes have a panoramic window and come coated with white canvas which allows plenty of sunlight inside. Coating considers an outer canvas layer and a thick insulation cushion to minimize the exchange of temperature.

Monday & Thursday

Sarmiento & Sarmiento Chico Lakes (Monday)
Activity: Nature Walk
Schedule: 9:30 am to 3:00 pm
Distance: 4 km / 3mi
Difficulty: 1/5
Walking time: 2h
Altitude point: 153m / 501ft
This easy-going, predominantly flat trek boasts stunningly diverse natural scenery and offers the chance to feast your eyes upon a startlingly blue lake, which is secluded from all the other water systems of the area. There will be ample opportunity to spot many graceful guanacos and great grebes along the way. First we will examine the geology of the area’s turbidite rock folds, before descending the isthmus which separates Lake Sarmiento from Lake Sarmiento Chico (the two lakes were once a single mass of water), walking along a slight slope, and ambling beside the eastern edge of Lake Sarmiento Chico. We will eventually arrive at an impressive bay on the western side of Lake Sarmiento, admiring a breath-taking view which could easily be mistaken for a piece of art! We will also be able to study the area’s characteristic calcium deposits here. Then begins our ascent back to the van, and along the way we will stumble across an awe-inspiring, panoramic vista of Lake Sarmiento from its western shore, looking towards its eastern coast glimmering on the horizon.

Sarmiento Lake & Fauna Trail (Thursday)

From here we drive back eastwards along the northern shore of Sarmiento Lake until we reach the starting point of the Fauna Trail. As we walk northwards along the trail we see park fauna on the Patagonian plains including guanacos, ostrich-like ñandús and maybe the occasional puma print! We pass by Goic Lagoon and after an approximate 5 km relaxed walk we reach the Laguna Amarga ranger station where we’re picked up and driven back to EcoCamp.

Towers Base Trek
Activity: Demanding Hiking
Schedule: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Distance: 22km / 14mi
Difficulty: 4/5
Walking time: 9h
Altitude point: 878m / 2,880ft
After a hearty breakfast we set off from Ecocamp towards Hostería Las Torres and join the uphill path to Ascencio Valley on the Tower's eastern face. Dry mountain spots, beech forests and small rivers line the scenic walk towards the valley. Our big challenge comes as we climb the steep moraine, a mass of boulders leading us towards one of the world's most famous views overlooking the Towers. The famous Torres del Paine (2,850 m/ 9,350 ft) consist of three gigantic granite monoliths, the remains of a great cirque sheared away by the forces of glacial ice. After an uphill slog, the Towers eventually come into full view, rising majestically before us, with the glacial lake visible below. Is there any better place in the world to have lunch? After feasting on the view and our picnic, we backtrack along the same trail through Ascencio Valley and return to EcoCamp.

Pehoe Lake Boat Ride & French Valley Hike
Activity: Demanding Hiking
Schedule: 8am to 8pm
Distance: 18km / 11mi
Difficulty: 3/5
Walking time: 6h
Altitude point: 500m / 1.640ft
After breakfast, we will be driven to Pudeto dock, located on the shores of Pehoe Lake. We will board the catamaran that will take us to the north-western sector of the Lake where we will begin the challenging trek to Valle Frances (French Valley) along a steep trail that leads to the very heart of the Paine Massif. How far in we go depends on our group's trekking rhythm. A faster pace will take us to the hanging bridge over the French River, located at the foot of the southeast face of the Massif, where we will be treated to fantastic views of the valley.We will then continue to ascend towards the upper section of the valley where we will be able to marvel at the extensive mass of the valley's geological formations: Hoja (Blade), Máscara (Mask), Espada (Sword), Catedral (Cathedral), Aleta de Tiburón (Shark’s Fin) and the magnificent Fortaleza (Fortress). After our upward trek, we will pause for a picnic and relax a while. This day's adventure will end as we descend through an undulating terrain of mixed grassland and light forest which will take us to Refugio Paine Grande, located on the peaceful shores of Lake Pehoe.

As we walk along the shores of the stunning Lake Pehoe, we will see the furious Salto Grande waterfalls where the water from Lake Nordenskjold cascades down into Pehoe. From here, we drive up to Grey Lake and wander along the beach. Here we enjoy a tasty box lunch by the lake before embarking on a boat ride across the icy waters to the towering blue walls of Glacier Grey. After this incredible up-close look at the glacier, we drive back to EcoCamp.

We begin the drive to Lake Grey where you should pause and raise your eyes to the huge peaks of the east. This wind-swept rock monster is Cerro Ferrier which, standing at 1599m/5246 ft, makes a rewarding (but intense) hike. First, you’ll pass through a forest that gives a fascinating insight into the diversity of austral trees. Here you’ll meet all the classics, lenga, coihue, ñire, and if you’re lucky you’ll meet the famous South American deer, the huemul, which is a national natural monument (keen-eyed watchers will remember it from the Chilean coat of arms).

Lazo Weber Hike
Activity: Hiking
Schedule: 10am to 6:30pm
Distance: 12km / 7.5mi
Difficulty: 4/5
Walking time: 5h
Altitude point: 700m / 2.300ft
We’ll start our day at 8:30 am with breakfast at EcoCamp and a moment to prepare our Box Lunch before boarding our bus at 10 am. Our ride takes us past the Lazo Weber Estancia where we’ll enter the National Park via Laguna Verde and begin our 12km hike. The Lazo Weber Trail is packed with native flora and wildlife all with the mountainous Paine range on our right. The hike is rather easy and apart from a few hills, the trail remains rather flat. We’ll stop a moment to refuel by the magical Laguna Honda and enjoy the sights and sensations of the gorgeous landscape and fresh breeze. On our way, we will hike through one of the quietest forests in the national park, a fantastic opportunity to observe native trees such as the Lenga and the Coihue. The rest of our hike takes us to a lookout point (El Toro Lookout) where we’ll be wowed with a 360-degree view of the Paine mountain range, the Patagonian Andes, and a suite of rivers and lakes (including the Paine, Grey, and Serrano Rivers, and Lake Toro, the largest in the region). An hour’s descent towards Paine River will see us reunited with our van.

Wild Horse Tracking
Activity: Nature Walk
Schedule: 8am to 5pm
Distance: 8km / 4mi
Difficulty: 3/5
Walking time: 6h
Altitude point: 300m / 984ft
After enjoying a buffet breakfast at EcoCamp, we'll head towards the Laguna Azul sector. From here, we'll begin our journey by 4x4 through the folds of the Cordillera Masle, from which we’ll be able to appreciate the Cordillera Baguales, Salto Las Chinas and Barranca de Los Toros pass. After about 40 minutes, we'll arrive at a typical "puesto" where Patagonian "gauchos" would take refuge while caring for their livestock. Here, we'll hear a short but interesting introduction to the area's history and the evolution and characteristics of its wild horses. With the help of satellite tracking equipment, coupled with our guide’s experience and knowledge, we'll begin our trek, searching for the 100 untamed horses that remain isolated in this sector surrounded by mountains, lakes, and plains, in the most pristine and untouched terrain of Torres del Paine. Depending on the location of the horses, we'll choose a place to have lunch and share our stories and experiences. The experience of tracking, observing and analyzing the horses in such natural surroundings is incomparable. Additionally, we'll be privy to fantastic views of Lago Stokes, the Cordillera Dickson, and the imposing Towers. After 7-8 hours, we'll return to EcoCamp, ready to enjoy an aperitif before settling down to a warm meal.
*Please note: The Wild Horse Tracking is not available during May and September.  During May and September (low season) the excursion will be replaced by a short nature walk close to Ecocamp.

Salto Grande & Condor Lookout
Activity: Contemplative Ride
Schedule: 10am to 5pm
Difficulty: 1/5
After breakfast we head westwards by van, taking a route along the southern shore of Nordenskjold lake. Our first stop is the magnificent Salto Grande waterfall, with its impressive cascading waters falling from Nordenskjold lake into Pehoe Lake. From here it's a short walk to Cuernos viewpoint, with a panoramic view of the mighty Horns. From this viewpoint, we drive to Pehoe Lake and begin the two-hour round-trip walk to El Condor Lookout from its shores. We go gently uphill through the steppe vegetation; a great opportunity to learn about the local flora. Here we witness the piercing blue of Pehoe Lake and the Paine river. On a clear day, we can see the immensity of the Southern Patagonian ice fields in the distance. We re-energize while taking in the whole Paine Mountain range and its stunning snowcapped peaks. After a hearty lunch in this perfect location, we backtrack along the same trail and drive back to EcoCamp.

Meals
One of the most popular features of EcoCamp is its delicious and plentiful food!

All that you will find at home: fruits, whole grain and white bread toast, cheese, scrambled eggs, butter, peanut butter, jam, cereals, granola, yogurt, milk, juice, honey, ham, coffee, tea, herb teas, and much more.

Box Lunch:
EcoCamp calls it a "buffet box lunch" because it is prepared after breakfast by each client before starting the excursion- they will find a pretty big table full of tasty elements to prepare a great sandwich: whole grain and white bread, cheeses, tuna, chicken, turkey, ham, beef, salami, sauces, variety of vegetables, hard boiled eggs, and more; additionally they will also find chocolate and granola bars, nuts and fruits.

Lunch or Dinner:
It starts with a cocktail consisting of our famous pisco sour and different small appetizers. Then the meal starts with a local soup and is followed by a piece of white or red meat with rice, potatoes or vegetables, everything accompanied by good Chilean wine - we provide a bottle for every 3 persons. Finally, a cup of coffee or herb teas with a delicious dessert will crown the meal. The meals often vary to make clients experience different flavors and local preparations. EcoCamp also serves vegetarian and gluten-free meals if indicated with anticipation when booking.

Clients can also buy juices, sodas, beers, wines, and alcoholic drinks.
