At Sacha Lodge, each day is a voyage of discovery. During excursions, visitors are divided into small groups (maximum six), each with its native guide and multilingual naturalist. Canoe outings and night hikes in search of caiman and other nocturnal species are included in the experiences. The 130-foot observation tower and 940-foot canopy walkway provide breathtaking views of the rainforest canopy. Additionally, this is an excellent location to view toucans and other tropical birds, as well as, with luck, noisy howler monkeys or a three-toed sloth. Not far from Sacha Lodge is Ecuador's most famous parrot lick, where tourists may witness dozens of beautifully colored birds feasting on the clay.
Highlights
Enjoy small groups tours (max 6), with your own native guide and bilingual naturalist
Enjoy dugout canoeing, swimming, and fishing for Piranhas
Spend three nights in Sacha Lodge, your Amazon adventure base
Involves minimal physical effort and is typically associated with leisurely activities. Activities are low-intensity or last less than a few hours each day.
A short flight takes you over the high Andes and down to the Amazon frontier town of Puerto Francisco de Orellana (called Coca by the locals). From here you travel by motorized canoe approximately two hours down the Napo River, followed by a short walk through a thick palm forest to Sacha Lodge -- your home for the next few days and base for an incredible Amazon travel adventure!
Your stay at Sacha Lodge is filled with discovery. Upon arrival, visitors are divided into small groups (max 6), each with its own naturalist/guide that stays with their group for the duration of their stay. This allows each hike, each canoe ride, and each exploration to build on the species seen or the lessons learned in the previous experience.
Twice-daily activities are centered around paddling dugout canoes along blackwater creeks and lakes - past luxuriant lianas, bromeliads, and enormous palms. There are points along many of these blackwater creeks where travelers will be able to get out and hike for a bit to further explore the Amazon ecosystem and see more wildlife.
Sacha Lodge also offers a number of very unique ways for visitors to get up high in the Amazon. A 130-foot-high observation tower and a 940-foot-long canopy walkway both give visitors a chance to get above the rainforest canopy for incredible views of the area. The Kapok tower climbs right into the highest reaches of one of the tallest trees in the Amazon, and a crane hoists travelers directly into the sky in an open-air basket - without all those pesky steps/stairs. These are great places to observe toucans and other tropical birds and, with luck, spot noisy howler monkeys, potoos, or three-toed sloths.
Swimming and piranha fishing are also popular (the piranha here are harmless, really!). And for the adventurous Ecuador traveler, there are nighttime walks and nighttime canoe trips in search of caiman and other nocturnal creatures. Finally, if staying in the rainforest long enough, travelers are also able to travel by the Yasuni Parrot Lick, on their way to a cultural experience at the Yasuni Community across the river from Sacha Lodge, just a short distance via motorized canoe.

The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
My travel consultant went out of her way to make sure everything went smoothly, everything from the flight reservations to the final booking.

The staff at Adventure Life made planning my family's trip to the Galapagos Islands as easy as possible. They listened to what we were hoping to experience and made thoughtful suggestions about how to accomplish our vacation goals while meeting the needs of travelers ages 17-76! They patiently answered questions and follow up questions in the months leading up to the trip. They helped us trouble shoot and customize the trip in every way possible. The logistics involved in traveling from Boston to the Galapagos are innumerable. The Adventure Life staff helped us arrange every detail and the team they assembled in the Galapagos was tremendous. I have never done a trip this big before and after working with Adventure Life this time--would not hesitate one second in working with them again.
