Top Ecuador & Galapagos Tour Ideas

Cruise the Galapagos Islands. Most Galapagos cruises are 4 to 8 days long and many travelers are left with additional time on their vacation that they can explore the wonders of mainland Ecuador. Here are our picks for the top Galapagos extensions.

Stay in an eco lodge in the Amazon (4-5 days from Quito)
Explore Yasuni National Park at lodges like Sacha and La Selva provide first class access to prime rainforest. Additionally, Huaorani Lodge gives you an in-depth look at the Huaorani indigenous people.

Explore Colonial Quito and the surrounding Andes
Most tours of Ecuador start and finish in Quito, and it's worthwhile to take an extra day or few exploring the city and nearby Cotopaxi volcano, Papallacta hotsprings, the cloudforest of Mindo, and the Otavalo market
How to Choose a Luxury Galapagos Cruise
The sheer number of boats and cruise options for the Galapagos is overwhelming. Here's how to go about choosing a luxury category yacht or small ship.

In the luxury category, the best small boat options are catamarans which ride stable in the water, have spacious cabins and carry up to 16 passengers. Top catamaran choices are the Ocean Spray, Cormorant and Sea Star Journey. Larger boats and small ships (over 16 passengers) are even more stable in the water. Top choices are the Endeavour, Evolution, and Grace.

Ecuador Travel FAQs

Do I need a visa to travel to Ecuador?
For stays up to 90 days, you do not need a visa to visit Ecuador, however you do need a Passport with at least 6 months validity.

Is tipping customary in Ecuador?
Generally, tipping is not an expectation in Ecuador, however the influence of US culture in many of the nicer restaurants and service industries has made it more common, and a service charge of 10-18 percent might be included in your bill. Otherwise tipping is still appreciated, especially for exemplary service.

What is internet access like in Ecuador?
While Ecuador's modern cities like Quito, Cuenca, and Guayaquil have very reliable high speed/ wireless internet, once you head into the more remote areas that most of our tours visit, especially in the Andes, Amazon, and Galapagos, you will probably not find accessible internet.

Can I use my cell phone while in Ecuador?
If you have an unlocked smartphone, you will be able to purchase a prepaid SIM card from one of the main service providers like CNT, Claro, or Movistar, but in many parts of the country you will be well out of range of the towers and you won't get signal anyway. It's usually best to just disconnect and enjoy the vacation!

Do I need power adapters?
Ecuador has the same 110v power system as North America, and plugs are two flat prongs, so an adapter/ converter is not necessary.

What are the toilets like in Ecuador?
Generally, the toilets in Ecuador are western style flushing toilets, especially in the developed tourist areas. However, deeper in the back country and at more remote visitor sites, you might come across a latrine style out-house. Never throw toilet paper in the bowl - use the waste basket you'll find next to all bathrooms.

Can I drink the water in Ecuador?
The tap water in Ecuador is not safe to drink, but we make sure that you always have access to plenty of safe bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted in Ecuador? Will I be able to find ATMs?
While credit cards are widely accepted at bigger businesses and restaurants in Ecuador, you'll need to have cash if you plan on purchasing anything from an artisan, street vendor, or smaller business. Our tours include everything on the itinerary, so other than drinks and souvenirs, your Adventure Life tour provides for all the essentials.

Should I purchase travel insurance?
Purchasing travel insurance is always a good idea and can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Check out the My Trips page for exclusive deals and offers.
