As our incredible adventure in the Galapagos came to an end Mom and I prepared for a very early morning with breakfast at 6am, before disembarking at Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz. After one last heart breakfast and a truly heartfelt goodbye to each member of the crew, we disembarked in Santa Cruz, ready for one last experience, led by our Naturalist Guide, before heading to the airport and back to Mainland Ecuador. Our first stop was the renowned Darwin Research Center, a vital hub for conservation and education in the islands.
Arriving at the center, we were immediately struck by its commitment to preserving the unique history and biodiversity of the Galapagos. There was much to see on the property including the preserved body of Lonesome George, the last of his particular tortoise species. However, the highlight of our visit was the opportunity to see the living Giant Tortoises up close. The center is dedicated to breeding and rehabilitating these iconic creatures, ensuring their survival for future generations. Walking through the exhibits, we learned about the various conservation projects underway and the vital role the center plays in educating both locals and visitors about the importance of protecting the Galapagos ecosystem. We ended our visit in the center's gift shop, where we could purchase items that would fund the research at the center. We were also able to send free digital post cards through a terminal in the main building.
After our insightful visit, it was time to continue our journey to Baltra, where the airport for Santa Cruz is located. Baltra is a small island that is accessed by crossing the entirety of Santa Cruz, which takes a bit of time. This is why our disembarkation was so early in the morning. We boarded a shuttle that took us across the island to the ferry terminal. This shuttle ride was about an hour and offered a scenic view of Santa Cruz, showcasing the lush landscapes and unique wildlife that make this island so special. Chris filled us on on the history of US military bases that had made Baltra their home, and how the local people have utilized the remaining buildings and materials since they were abandoned. Along our drive we actually stopped twice to check out wild roaming giant tortoises that were wandering down the side of the road!
Once at the ferry terminal, Chris and the boat crew whisked our luggage away to a small boat, while we waited for the passenger ferry. The ferry ride itself was quick and efficient (about 12 minutes) transporting us from Santa Cruz to Baltra, where the airport is located. Our luggage was loaded into the "Express shuttle" waiting for us on Baltra. We loaded up as well and continued on our way. The experience was smooth, with organized transfers ensuring that we arrived at our destination on time and with no hiccups.
Upon arriving at Baltra, we said our farewells to each other, and everyone gave Chris a hug goodbye. Before going our separate ways, we were welcomed with a special treat: VIP lounge access provided by the Galaxy Sirius. This was a wonderful way to unwind after a busy morning. The lounge offered complimentary fresh juices and light refreshments, and there was ample outdoor seating where we could relax and enjoy the warm sunny day away from the bustle of the airport terminal. This was one of my favorite Galaxy Sirius perks.
Disembarking in Santa Cruz and visiting the Darwin Research Center was the perfect way to conclude our journey through the Galapagos Islands. The logistical arrangements from Puerto Ayora to Baltra were seamless, making the transition easy and enjoyable.

The staff at Adventure Life made planning my family's trip to the Galapagos Islands as easy as possible. They listened to what we were hoping to experience and made thoughtful suggestions about how to accomplish our vacation goals while meeting the needs of travelers ages 17-76! They patiently answered questions and follow up questions in the months leading up to the trip. They helped us trouble shoot and customize the trip in every way possible. The logistics involved in traveling from Boston to the Galapagos are innumerable. The Adventure Life staff helped us arrange every detail and the team they assembled in the Galapagos was tremendous. I have never done a trip this big before and after working with Adventure Life this time--would not hesitate one second in working with them again.
