This journey can only be described as a journey because there are no adjectives that can effectively describe it.
After an early morning wake-up at our hotel in Punta Arenas, Chile (flight times to King George Island are always subject to changes and are very weather dependent) we headed to the small hotel-sized airport. Even though it was early, the energy in the group was palpable - we were going to Antarctica! The charter plane - penguin colored of course - took us over the Drake Passage in just two hours to reach the gravel runway of a Chilean research base on the King George Island Antarctica. Having experienced the Drake passage first hand sailing over it on my previous Antarctica cruise, this experience was quite easy- and with no seasickness! Stepping foot off the plane, we were quickly brought down to the shore to board the Greg Mortimer. Catching a few glimpses of our first penguins en route, we knew we had arrived. We walked down from the runway to the shore, put on our boots, and jumped into the zodaics.
