Carlisle Bay, Barbados (Mary Curry)Barbados Sunset (Mary Curry)
Along the same stretch of beach as our hotel is a large public beach in Carlisle Bay. Here you can rent beach chairs, simple snorkeling gear, and a few watersports. We had booked a ‘turtle and shipwreck’ snorkeling tour the day before and were flabbergasted when our boat took off from the beach club next door and traveled only about 100 meters down the shoreline in front of the public beach to do the snorkeling. Having learned our lesson the previous day, we just rented snorkeling gear today and headed straight out to where the snorkeling boats congregated at the far end of the designated swimming area. Though we didn’t see any sea turtles on this second day, we did see a beautiful ray and several large fish that might have been sharks given their prominent dorsal fin, but I didn’t get a close enough look to be sure.
