Day 1: Peruvian Paso Horseback Riding Full Day Tour

  • 1 Lunch
Depart from your hotel this morning and drive to the Andean community of Piscuyro, where the Ranch is located. Here you will meet the horses and receive a safety briefing. Following ancient trails, start your uphill ride. Along the way, you will see Andean communities with traditional houses built with adobe and fields brimming with local crops. After an hour of riding, you will arrive at the highest point of the trail (K'asa). From here, you will be able to see amazing views of the Urubamba mountain range that surrounds the Sacred Valley with its snowcapped mountains. Continuing on your ride, you will have the first views of the Moray Terraces. Dismount your horses and explore the ruins with your guide. Moray was used as an Incan Laboratory to acclimatize crops. Ancient people of the region took four enormous natural depressions in the landscape and sculpted them into several levels of agricultural terraces that served, hundreds of years ago, as an experimental agricultural station for the development of different strain of crops. After your exploration of Moray, break for lunch and a rest.

Afterwards, continue on your ride towards the town of Maras. Maras is a typical Andean village. Continue on through the village until you reach the Maras salt mines. The salt pools here have an average area of 54 ft², constructed in a slope of the Qaqawiña mountain. Learn how local people irrigate the pools to make the famous salt here. Afterwards, you will meet your driver and return to your hotel.

This trip is approximately 7 hours with 3 ½ hours of riding. The difficulty level is easy with no experience required.

Standard horses are also available in place of Peruvian Paso. Maximum rider weight is 187 lbs. Group minimum of four travelers is required.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
