While planning your cruise to Norway, you will find that there are several main categories of boats. The most popular options are icebreakers and research vessels. Aboard an icebreaker, like the powerhouse 50 Years of Victory, you will be able to crush through the thick ice that covers these Arctic waters and reach otherwise inaccessible sites. Other small ships, like the expedition vessel MS Stockholm, are ice-strengthened, meaning that their thick steel hulls allow them to push safely through thinner ice caps and pack ice. The research vessels, such as Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Shokalskiy, were designed for academic expeditions into the Arctic, and while they aren't particularly luxurious boats, they do offer travelers comfortable accommodations and excellent guides for polar exploration and scientific research.
