Opatija – Croatia’s Green Heart: Gorski kotar (the Green heart of Croatia) is an integral part of Primorsko-goranska County. It is a highland with forests, and you pass through it on your way from Zagreb to Rijeka. The center of the region is the town of Delnice. The National Park "Risnjak" is located in this part of Croatia. Gorski kotar abounds in natural beauties and particularities, with some parts completely uninhabited and wild, as depopulation struck this area after the Second World War. Delnice is the center of Gorski kotar and, with 4451 inhabitants (census 2001), it is also the largest place. It is situated in Delničko Polje (valley) and surrounded by hills (Drgomalj, Petehovac and Japlenški Vrh). This is why Delnice is a destination recommended for high-altitude athletic training, but also for active holidays, recreation, or walking tours. The fresh mountain air, enriched by a scent of conifers, works as a natural aromatherapy.
