Included Excursion
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI
At Philippi, one of Greece’s key archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, history comes alive. Founded in 356 BC by King Philip II of Macedonia, the city played a vital role in Western history. Explore ruins from the Hellenistic era, including walls, gates, and a theater, as well as Roman temples and public buildings from its time as “small Rome” after the 42 BC Battle of Philippi.
In 49 or 50 AD, the Apostle Paul established Europe’s first Christian church here, making Philippi a center of early Christianity. Byzantine walls and towers reflect the city’s later history. Excavations began in 1914 and continue today, uncovering layers of the city's past.
