The Falkland Islands experience fairly mild weather year-round, due to the moderating influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Summer daytime temperatures average around 60 to 65 degrees, while winter daytime temperatures average between 35 and 40 degrees. The islands see a good bit of sunshine, especially in the summer months. Summer days enjoy an average of 7.5 hours of sunshine, while this average dips to about 2 hours per day in the cooler winter months. The islands tend to be fairly dry, with Stanley--on the wetter, eastern island--averaging only 23 inches of rain per year. What the islands lack in rainfall they make up in wind, however, as strong prevailing winds blow in from the west year-round, though they tend to be stronger in the summer than in the winter. When packing for your Falkland Islands tour, be sure to be prepared for abrupt changes in the weather! All four seasons may be experienced in one day, so layers--base layer, fleece, and wind/rain gear--are essential.
