Corfu is a fascinating island that has a history as diverse as it's landscape. The island's strategic location in the Ionian Sea made it a coveted prize for many ancient powers. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, French, and British have all left their mark on this enchanting island, contributing to its unique cultural mosaic. The Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a testament to its rich history. Wandering through its narrow, cobbled streets feels like stepping back in time. The town’s Venetian architecture is particularly striking, with its pastel-colored buildings, grand fortresses, and elegant squares.
As would soon become our norm on this midsummer adventure, we spent the morning exploring culture and history and then went in search of water for the afternoon. A 15 minute bus ride from Old Town and meandering walk thru a residential area led us to the small sliver of Corcyra Beach to tick another box on Samantha's trip list- learning to water ski. The experience proved to be exceptional, largely thanks to the instructor’s remarkable expertise and engaging demeanor. His blend of confidence and relaxed enthusiasm made the learning process both enjoyable and effective. Onshore, he demonstrated the necessary techniques, then guided Samantha into the water with a practice bar attached to the boat’s port side, allowing for ongoing instruction.
Samantha mastered the practice bar with ease and soon found herself skimming across the water with the ropes in hand. It was a remarkable sight—her first attempt at water skiing and not a single fall. Although Corcyra Beach itself offers little beyond this memorable waterskiing lesson, the superb instruction made the visit truly worthwhile.
