Established in 2007 by Costa Rican couple Francisco and Raquel Castro, Cala Lodge is nestled on a serene 7.4-acre property surrounded by lush nature, just five minutes from Santa Elena and 4.9 miles from Monteverde. The Castro family has deep roots in the region, with Francisco’s ancestors, the Leitóns, being among Monteverde’s first settlers in the 1920s.
The lodge features rustic-style rooms with full bathrooms, with select suites offering bathtubs. Guests can unwind on the bird-watching deck, sun terrace, or in cozy reading areas with breathtaking mountain views. A minibar is provided in every room, and beverages are conveniently available at the front desk.
Cala Lodge is committed to sustainability, emphasizing nature conservation, community development, and responsible tourism. The lodge supports the local economy by sourcing supplies locally, employing local staff, and collaborating with organizations to protect nature and cultural heritage. Sustainable practices include using biodegradable products, respecting wildlife, and promoting resource conservation. Educational programs and policies further ensure an eco-friendly and community-focused operation.
Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
