Discovering Chile’s Stunning Desert - San Pedro de Atacama
Atacama Desert
While three days felt short to fully experience all that San Pedro de Atacama has to offer, the tours I managed to fit into my unforgettable adventure allowed me to explore its breathtaking landscapes and unique attractions, making the most of every moment.
Nestled in the heart of the Atacama Desert, San Pedro de Atacama is a charming oasis town that serves as the perfect gateway to explore some of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth, a starting point for the exploration of unique valleys, salt lakes, lakes, geysers and mountains.

One of the things that makes San Pedro so special is its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. The town’s cobblestone streets and rustic, unpaved roads lend it a timeless, authentic charm, with shop signs crafted from wood and buildings facades using local materials such as stone, adobe, and chañar and algarrobo wood

One iconic spot in town is the church of St Peter, the town’s centerpiece and one of the oldest monuments in the region, dated from the 15th century, partially reconstructed over the years due to earthquakes and fires.

Getting to San Pedro de Atacama is easy and convenient. A quick flight of just under 2 hours from Santiago to Calama El Loa Airport (CJC) brings you to northern Chile, followed by a scenic 1.5-hour drive to the heart of San Pedro.
Currency and Exchange Tips
The local currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP). While most places in San Pedro accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to carry a bit of cash for smaller purchases. You'll find ATMs and currency exchange houses near Caracoles Street for your convenience.

Altitude Sickness
San Pedro de Atacama sits at an altitude of over 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) and many of the attractions to visit are located over 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), so it is advisable to be prepared for altitude sickness. Be sure to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol for the first couple of days, and take it slow when exploring high-altitude sites like the Tatio Geysers.

I found it helpful to pace my tours based on altitude, starting with the nearby Moon Valley on day one, and gradually working my way up to more challenging excursions like the Tatio Geysers on the final day. This approach helped me acclimatize and fully enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the region.
