Situated in one of Hwange National Park's last remaning unspoilt acacia woodland areas, this lodge offers proximity to many small waterbath areas that attract smaller and less destructive woodland creatures such as bushbuck, mongoose, squirrels, and an abundance of birdlife.

The lodge is located just a short hour long charter flight from Bulawayo or Victoria Falls, or a 4 hour drive from either town. Less than a kilometer away and inside the Hwange National Park boundaries is an underground blind located right in front of a watering hole, offering great elephant photography opportunities from only 25 ft away.

The unique design of the Camelthorn main lodge incorporates a magnificent and ancient camelthorn tree that spans the length of the dining room. Eight luxiuriously furnished forest villas keep guests cool in the hot months and warm in cooler months. Each villa offers en suite bathrooms with a bath and window overlooking the forest, fireplace, ground level deck, upstairs outdoor maisonette with hammock and daybed. Electricity is provided by generator.

Activities at Camelthorn

Game Drives - Enjoy wildlife spotting from the comfortable Land Rover vehicles designed to maximize your experience. Enjoy snacks and other complimentary drinks while you spot wildlife with a professional guide.

Game Walks - Walk along the Ngamo Plains with a licensed guide and experience Hwange National Park from a different perspective on the ground. Get close-ups of elephants and small frogs among other wildlife.

Night Drives - Use red-filtered spotlights to spot the wildlife activity at night. Species like zorillas, selous mongoose, and bush babies seldom show themselves in the daylight hours.

Pump Runs - As the dry season leaves the area completely void of water, wildlife have subsisted on water pumped by men for the past 70 years in this area, once by windmills, and now by generator powered pumps. The lodges in the area shoulder the responsibility for maintaining the pumps as well as providing for the attendants who operate them. Join the staff as they set out to a watering hole with fuel for the generator and rations for the attendant. Enjoy a snack or lunch en route, spot wildlife, and return to the lodge in the afternoon.

Look Up Underground Blind - Explore the elephant-proof hide located about a 5 minute drive from the lodge. Disguised as an antheap, the blind offers up close and personal photography opportunities, particularly at sunrise and sunset of these magnificent giants.

Village Visit and School Tours - Visit the nearby rural village of Matabeleland and visit the local school if its in session. As a dweller on the community land, Camelthorn activity contributes to the development projects for the community and the school, and encourages its guests to go and experience the local rural life.Oftentimes Camelthorn guests are greeted with a song by the children and are encouraged by teachers to interact with the students.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.
