Visit "La Calera de las Huérfanas" National Monument, located about 70 km/43.5 mi away and estimated to take 55 minutes by route. During the XVIII century, the Jesuits established themselves in this northern region of Uruguay's Colonia Province, constructing buildings in 1741 for their mission. This site served as a gathering place for Indians, slaves, and priests. Following the Jesuits' expulsion by the Spanish crown, Don Juan de San Martín took over the estate and discovered 1500 grapevines, marking Uruguay's wine production inception.
