The Arctic Circle is a place of mystique and wonder, a geographical marker that symbolizes the stark beauty and remoteness of the far North. And there's no better way to experience the thrill of crossing it than by venturing to Grimsey Island, a small, rugged gem that straddles the Arctic Circle. Grimsey Island, situated 41 kilometers off the northern coast of Iceland, is the only part of Iceland that crosses the Arctic Circle. To reach this remote outpost, you embark on a journey from mainland Iceland, typically taking a short domestic flight to Akureyri, followed by a scenic ferry ride to the island.
Grimsey may be small in size, but it's colossal in natural beauty. As you set foot on the island, you'll find yourself surrounded by dramatic cliffs, bird-filled skies, and the endless expanse of the Arctic Ocean. The island's lush green landscapes stand in stark contrast to the rugged terrain, providing a striking backdrop to your Arctic adventure. The highlight of your Grimsey Island visit is undoubtedly the act of crossing the Arctic Circle by foot. A small marker, often adorned with whimsical decorations and flags, indicates the precise line where you transition from the temperate zone to the Arctic. It's a moment of triumph and wonder, as you stand on the line that divides the world's climates.
Grimsey Island is also known for its vibrant birdlife, particularly its Atlantic Puffin population. These charming birds come to Grimsey in the summer to nest and raise their young. If you visit during the puffin season, you'll have the chance to observe these comical and endearing creatures up close, a memory you'll cherish forever.
Crossing the Arctic Circle by foot on Grimsey Island is a journey into a realm of natural beauty and wonder. Whether you're captivated by the unique wildlife, the stark landscapes, or the thrill of stepping over that invisible line, this adventure is sure to leave an indelible mark on your soul. Grimsey Island offers a glimpse into the magical world of the Arctic, a place where nature's beauty reigns supreme, and the Arctic Circle is more than just a line on the map; it's an experience to be cherished forever.

I've worked with Adventure Life before in planning trips and appreciate the quality of trips they put together. They use knowledgeable local guides, comfortable lodgings, and assist with transportation. I find trip planning stressful, so am happy to turn it over to them. They work within our parameters of time, budget, activity level, and types of activities to give us great experiences!

We have been working with Adventure Life for 5 years now and it is very easy to plan out our trips. Our holidays include customization of activities and side trips along with the standard packages available on the Adventure Life website. Kevin, Jess, Mary Rose and their teams have many recommendations that have enhanced our travel.

We went to the Patagonia on the Chile side and Perito Moreno in El Calafate, Argentina. Eric of San Diego handled our trip with expertise. The preparation went smoothly, despite some changes on our part with scheduling conflicts. He offered great advice which made us feel at ease with all decisions on the trip. It was truly a great experience.
