Helicopters on the Ultramarine

One of the more unique capabilities on the Ultramarine is the ability to launch helicopters off the aft deck.  The Ultramarine makes great use of these helicopters - two twin-engine H145s from Airbus - with three different activities on the Southern Greenland itineraries.

         - On Flightseeing excursions, passengers are whisked from the deck of the Ultramarine on 10-20 minute flight seeing journeys, offering breathtaking aerial views of polar landscapes, including icebergs, ice fields, and wildlife.
         - On Heli-Hiking excursions, passengers are dropped off on remote ridges or high plateaus for hiking and exploration. Folks will be in the air for 10-20 minutes, and on those remote ridges or plateaus for 30-90 minutes, depending on the location.
         - On Ice Sheet Landing excursions, passengers fly above the ice sheet itself, and ultimately disembark for explorations in locations that are otherwise inaccessible by foot or by ship.

Note that southern Greenland is one of the absolute best places to take advantage of these different helicopter-based excursions.  The ice sheet is easily accessible, the mountains are spectacularly dramatic, and the views from mountain plateaus seem to go on forever.  The only thing making it challenging is the weather, as the helicopters are understandably unable to be flown into cloud cover in such dramatic terrain.
