Nothing quite compares to a European Christmas market for getting into the holiday spirit. These markets started in the Middle Ages or before. In the beginning, they were mostly essential markets, designed to provide locals a way to stock up on necessary goods to get through the long, cold winter. Over time, vendors added handmade winter goods such as blankets, gloves and hats as well as toys for the kids.
These early markets evolved to become social highlights of the year. Hot food and drinks became common offerings and eventually activities were added to enhance the event- ice skating and, more recently, amusement rides like carousels and ferris wheels.
Nowadays the markets are elaborately decorated with wooden booths constructed in late November and holiday decorations added on all sides. Street performers entertain the locals.
What amazed me most was just how many people the markets attract. Our first market visit was in Strasbourg where the market had just opened for the season and it was a Saturday so it was no surprise that crowds were heavy. However, even midday during the week, I was amazed by how many locals gathered at the smaller markets. Outside of Strasbourg, none felt overly crowded, but it was clear that locals had taken time off to enjoy socializing together. I had to wonder... did they take a full month off work or was it just common to work short days during Christmas market season to enjoy the festivities? Either way, it make for a lively atmosphere full of laughter, sharing food and relaxed locals intermixed with travelers.
Very well ececuted. Hily recomended. Great experiance

I've worked with Adventure Life before in planning trips and appreciate the quality of trips they put together. They use knowledgeable local guides, comfortable lodgings, and assist with transportation. I find trip planning stressful, so am happy to turn it over to them. They work within our parameters of time, budget, activity level, and types of activities to give us great experiences!

We have been working with Adventure Life for 5 years now and it is very easy to plan out our trips. Our holidays include customization of activities and side trips along with the standard packages available on the Adventure Life website. Kevin, Jess, Mary Rose and their teams have many recommendations that have enhanced our travel.

We went to the Patagonia on the Chile side and Perito Moreno in El Calafate, Argentina. Eric of San Diego handled our trip with expertise. The preparation went smoothly, despite some changes on our part with scheduling conflicts. He offered great advice which made us feel at ease with all decisions on the trip. It was truly a great experience.
