Jen and I have had quite a few different exploratory experiences in Quito. The best part of having a local office is that we get to see these wonderful folks on each pass through, and they always want to show off their favorite parts of the city.
Together with these local experts, we’ve developed a pretty flexible system for our travelers to explore the city in the days before or after their Galapagos or Amazon experience. Folks are able to explore Quito on a full day 8-hour tour, choosing three top experiences from a variety of options to match their interests. Because it is a private tour, with a dedicated driver and guide, the timing can be flexible, and the plans can change on the fly.
Here’s a quick sampling of what is possible on this Quito Highlights day. Travelers can generally choose three of the following in an eight-hour day.
City Tour – Begin with a walk through the historic streets of Quito’s Old Town. Enjoy stone pathways, famous cathedrals, and grand architecture while the guide reveals hidden spots, shares local legends, and gives insight into Ecuador’s culture and history.
Equator Visit – Stand at the equator line where you can be in both hemispheres at once. Capture the perfect photo and learn about Ecuador’s unique position and ancient knowledge of the "Middle of the World.”
Cable Car – Ride the Teleferico from the edge of the city up to a height of 4,000 meters, on the flanks of Pichincha Volcano. A series of trails leads off from here, enjoying views of the city and surrounding Andean mountains. Take in the geographical landscape and explore the high-altitude trails - but take it slow, as there’s simply less oxygen up here than just about anywhere we all call home. There’s a giant swing-set at the edge of the world up here, which might be a good goal to try to reach.
Artisanal Market & Traditional Neighborhoods – Walk through Quito’s modern districts of La Floresta and La Mariscal, filled with street art, historic buildings, and local energy. Visit an Artisanal Market to find handmade goods and interact with local vendors. You may also have an opportunity to experience a traditional “cleanse” or “blessing” from a local healer.
Local Market & Chocolate Tasting – Discover one of Quito’s vibrant local markets, filled with colorful produce, spices, and crafts. Engage with local vendors as you explore. Then, savor chocolate tastings as you immerse yourself in Quito’s rich culinary heritage.
Botanical Garden & Vivarium – In Parque Carolina, discover over 18,000 plant species in Quito’s Botanical Garden, including 4,000 varieties of orchids. Explore the Vivarium and see reptiles and amphibians native to Ecuador’s ecosystems.
Museums – Choose from various museums that showcase archaeology, history, art, and numismatics. Guided tours offer deep insights into Ecuador’s cultural treasures.
Casa Agave – Explore the world of Agave at Casa Agave. Learn about the process of making agave-based spirits, tour the garden and distillery, and enjoy a tasting of Ecuador’s renowned Miska spirit.

I selected Adventure Travel as I was not satisfied with the responsiveness of the agent for the cruise I was trying to book and it had good recommendations. So far, I am quite happy with my agent, Betty, very responsive and accommodating.
