Bella Coola is a hidden gem on British Columbia's Central Coast. It is nestled in a valley where the waters of the Bella Coola River flow into the ocean, surrounded by lush mountains, and rich wildlife. This small secluded community immediately sets the stage for explorers and lovers of nature. Here are the five best reasons to visit.
1. Where Nature Reigns
The Bella Coola area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities such as hiking, fishing, rafting, and wildlife viewing. A must-visit is Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, where you'll find stunning landscapes and many trails to explore.
As you explore this region, you can appreciate its diverse wildlife, including seals, otters, and whales. Take the opportunity to learn about the Nuxalk Nation for a richer understanding of the area’s Indigenous heritage through their art and traditions.
Mountain Majesty
The mountain range that surrounds Bella Coola enhances its natural beauty. Three towering mountains provide a beautiful backdrop, inviting visitors to explore the vast wilderness. The sheer magnitude and beauty of these natural monuments leave an unforgettable impression, making any outdoor activity from hiking to photography memorable.

Coastal Wonders
The intersection of the Bella Coola River and the Pacific Ocean provides a distinct coastal environment. Kwatna Bay, in particular, is home to over 60 species of marine animals, including dolphins. This rich environment offers countless opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
Untamed Rainforests
The area is bordered by largely unspoiled forests. Adventurers can go on hikes through habitats teeming with diverse plant species, tall trees, and clear streams. Exploring these forests is both challenging and rewarding, as each journey reveals the exquisite beauty of nature.
2. Thriving Wildlife Encounters
Bella Coola is an excellent destination for nature aficionados. While bear sightings are not guaranteed, the region's biodiverse ecosystems increase the likelihood of seeing different wildlife species:
Marine mammals
Kwatna Bay is well-known for its dolphin populations, which allow visitors to observe these playful creatures in their natural environment. Whale watching is also popular, with orcas and humpback whales frequently seen during migration seasons.
Feathered Friends
Many bird species live in the various ecosystems that surround Bella Coola. Seabirds are common along the shore, as well as woodpeckers, warblers, and bald eagles. Birdwatchers find the region to be a paradise for birdlife.
Land Mammals
The proximity to the Great Bear Rainforest increases the likelihood of encountering grizzly bears, particularly during salmon seasons. Black bears are also common, as are deer and other fauna. Seeing these species in their natural habitats is an exciting experience for many people.
3. Rich Indigenous Heritage
Bella Coola's natural beauty is intertwined with its First Nations heritage, particularly that of the Nuxalk Nation, who have inhabited the area for over 10,000 years. Visitors can obtain unique insights into ancient activities and relationships with the land, giving depth to their journey. While specific activities may vary depending on the season and community initiatives, consider the following potential experiences:
Engage with local cultural centers or guided tours to learn about traditional Nuxalk life, including their intricate relationship with the salmon runs, their sophisticated woodworking skills evident in totem poles and houses, as well as their social structures and spiritual beliefs.
Explore sites of cultural significance, such as traditional village locations, which might offer insights into the Nuxalk Nation’s history. (Note: Access to some sites may be restricted; it's important to check beforehand and respect community guidelines).
Discover the work of Nuxalk artists who keep traditional techniques alive while expressing contemporary perspectives. You might find opportunities to meet these artists, learn about their craft, and perhaps purchase unique pieces of art to commemorate your visit.
Seek out opportunities to support Nuxalk-owned businesses and initiatives, such as restaurants serving traditional foods, artisans selling their creations, and tourism operations dedicated to providing authentic cultural experiences.
4. Outdoor Adventure Opportunities
Bella Coola is nothing short of an outdoor enthusiast's ideal place to visit. The surrounding area provides a wide range of adventure activities:
Hiking
Bella Coola's routes are suitable for all ability levels, ranging from short hikes to strenuous treks. Hiking through the woods or conquering the mountains offers beautiful vistas and an opportunity to connect with nature.
Fishing and Kayaking
The Bella Coola River is ideal for fishing, especially during salmon seasons. Kayaking along the river and coastal seas allows tourists to experience the landscape up close while also potentially encountering marine life.

Cruse ship was great. Fantastic food and service. Cruise itinary got changed so not what we expected, but not an major issue. Japan portion was great. Drivers/guides arranged by 80 Days were great. Hotels were mostly ok. Did not know that most hotels outside of major cities do not allow shoes to be worn in the hotel. again a minor inconvenience. Overall a great trip. Adventure Life communications were timely and much appreciated as far as changes/requests.

We were a group of three that initiated our research by independently searching for the best agency to help us in the somewhat complex experience of traveling to the Galapagos. We chose adventure life because they were the most responsive in the website provided the most comprehensive overview of the trip. Their reviews were also very good.
Adventure, life splits up its booking process in two parts. First Jeff, the booking agent helped us decide which experience best suited are interests. We chose a small 14 to 16 group sized yacht. Once the booking was made with Jeff, we were handed off to Coleene, who oversaw the complex process of assembling all of the necessary documents and making sure we had everything we needed to make the trip go smoothly. The adventure, life website, then becomes your personal place of reference for all things related to your trip from door to door. It’s a lot of information to assemble, especially for three travelers, but the website makes it easy and Colleen‘s gentle reminders kept us on track. In all, from the beginning, we had four months from the time we started our research till the time we departed. We felt that was, a good amount of preparation time and don’t think it would be wise to do it in less than four months. Mostly because I think you have more options with that amount of time. There were others on our trip that took six months and more from the time they started planning.
The trip itself was outstanding. We ended up on an excellent yacht (Galapagos Angel II) with a great group of guests that we were able to connect with and put together a really nice google photos album to share.
