Sustainability
At The Backwaters, sustainability is central to every aspect of the experience. From the start, the focus has been on being community-driven and eco-friendly. The goal is to create an environment that reflects these values, with sustainability influencing every decision. The integration of the local community into the hotel’s operations makes the staff just as important as the guests, contributing to a meaningful, eco-conscious stay.
  • Environmental Responsibility
    • The Backwaters is dedicated to minimizing its environmental impact. With solar power systems in place, the hotel operates with nearly zero carbon emissions. The property follows a strict no-plastic policy, replacing all single-use plastics with upcycled or biodegradable materials. Additionally, shipping containers are upcycled, pallets are repurposed into furniture, and waste is carefully managed to ensure minimal impact on the environment and surrounding area.
  • Social Responsibility
    • The Backwaters works closely with the local community, involving them in every aspect of the hotel’s operations. From construction to activities like boat rides, all are managed by local villagers. The hotel also supports local businesses by partnering with them for excursions and outdoor activities, while creating job opportunities for women in the area. Empowering women is a key focus, offering a space for local women to thrive and become independent, even if they never had a professional job. This initiative plays a vital role in improving their quality of life and advancing gender equality within the community.

River Safari
  • Drift peacefully down the Kala Oya River as it winds through the forest, offering a serene escape into nature. Feel the gentle breeze and the soothing rhythm of the water as you glide past picturesque landscapes, creating lasting memories. Where the river meets the first at the horizon, spot flocks of storks soaring through the sky or a solitary kingfisher poised on a branch, eyeing its next meal. During the dry season, you might even catch sight of a lone elephant venturing to the riverbank for a refreshing drink.
Tuk Tuk Tours
  • Hop into a tuk-tuk, the all-time favorite mode of transport, and explore nearby villages and scenic surroundings. Ride along winding roads through lush fields, forests, serene lakes, and vibrant village life. It's a fun-filled adventure, offering an authentic taste of Sri Lankan charm.
Bird Watching
  • The rich habitats around the Backwaters make it an ideal destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. From resident and migratory waterbirds wading in nearby lakes to rare endemic species flitting through the treetops, it's a true paradise for bird lovers. Spot hornbills, eagles, owls, warblers, flycatchers, munias, terns, weavers, swifts, and many more. The surrounding forests and nature reserves offer endless opportunities to capture stunning photographs of these incredible creatures.
Wilpattu National Park
  • Discover the wonders of Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park, a place rich in history and natural beauty. Begin your safari early to enjoy breathtaking birdwatching as flocks fill the treetops, and if you're lucky, catch a glimpse of a leopard strolling along the trail. Venture deep into the jungle to encounter three of Sri Lanka's Big Five - elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. Along the way, you may also spot spotted deer, sambar, jackals, barking deer, crocodiles, mongooses, and a host of other fascinating wildlife.
Island Getaway
  • Enhance your experience with a visit to a picturesque island in the middle of the river, just minutes from the hotel. It's an ideal setting for a romantic evening with your partner, complete with wine and dining under the stars, or a lively gathering with family and friends around a glowing bonfire.
Bicycle Excursions
  • Explore the sights in an active way by hopping on a bike and setting off on an adventure. Ride along rugged trails or smooth paved roads, cruising through the village at your own pace. Stop under a shady tree for a moment of relaxation, or immerse yourself in an authentic village experience. During harvest season, roll up your sleeves and join local farmers in gathering the paddy crop-digging into the cool mud for some rewarding hard work.
Kayaking
  • Paddle through the calm backwaters and immerse yourself in nature. Feel the refreshing breeze and the soothing rhythm of the gently tapping water. This peaceful journey offers a chance to connect with the rich ecosystem around you. Watch birds soaring above or catch glimpses of fish splashing nearby as you glide along the river in your kayak.
Fishing
  • Cast your line and try your luck with a relaxing fishing experience. Whether you choose to fish from the river deck or enjoy a trolling session at sea, there's plenty to catch in the abundance of backwaters. With equipment provided by the hotel, spend a laid-back afternoon on the deck hoping for a big catch, or venture to Kalpitiya for a chance to reel in something larger. Perfect for both seasoned anglers and beginners alike!
Dolphin and Whale Watching
  • A 45-minute trip to Kalpitiya, followed by a quick boat ride, takes you to the deep waters where you can spot two of Sri Lanka's Big Five marine wonders Blue Whale and the Sperm Whale. Other species often seen here include Melon-Headed, Pilot, Bryde's, and Dwarf Sperm Whales, drawn to the krill-rich waters near the coast. Kalpitiya is one of the best locations in Sri Lanka to witness their gentle giants up close. Alongside the whales, massive pods of dolphins add to the excitement. From playful Spinner and Spotted Dolphins to the vibrant Striped Dolphins and the more common Bottlenose Dolphins, there's plenty to marvel at. The elusive Humpback, Risso, and Fraser Dolphins are also found in the deeper water, completing this extraordinary marine spectacle.
Snorkeling
  • Explore the vibrant marine life in the tropical waters of Kalpitiy by snorkeling along the shallow coastline. Home to Bar Reef, Sri Lanka's largest coral reef, the area is teeming with colorful fish and sea creatures. You may encounter Manta Rays, Sea Turtles, and Reef Sharks as you guide through the crystal-clear waters.
Places of Interest
  • A short boat ride will take you to Kalpitiya, where you can explore Dutch Bay and visit the old Dutch Fort, a small square-shaped fort made of coral and limestone. Just a few meters from the fort, you'll find a quaint Dutch church.
  • A one-hour drive north leads you to Tambapanni, now known as Kudrimalai Point, which features unique red earth cliffs. This historic site marks the landing place of Prince Vijaya, the founder of the Sri Lankan people.
  • About an hour and a half south is the Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary, a stunning blend of mangrove, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems. It’s home to a wide variety of resident, native, and migratory birds.
  • A two-hour drive to the center of the island brings you to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a key site in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. Dating back to the 5th century BC, Anuradhapura was the capital of the Sri Lankan kingdom until the 11th century AD. The city is known for its ancient stupas, reservoirs, rock carvings, monasteries, palaces, and monumental stone statues. Don’t miss the 2,200-year-old Sri Maha Bodhi tree, the world’s oldest historical tree, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Abhayagiri and Jetawana Dagabas, both towering structures second in height only to the pyramids of Giza.
Village Walks
  • Take a guided tour with a local from the village or explore on your own. Cross small streams and lunch paddy fields as you make your way to the beautiful Lotus Lake (Nelum Wewa), a peaceful spot filled with Weaver bird nests. Along the way, you'll be greeted by friendly locals who are always ready to welcome you with a warm smile and offer a refreshing king coconut.

The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
