Exploring Todos Santos: Markets, Beaches and Culinary Treats
Nestled on the western coast of Baja California Sur, Todos Santos is a "Pueblo Magico" in Mexico, founded originally as a Mission in 1724, later a major sugar can producer, where the rugged desert meets the tranquil sea. Known for its vibrant arts scene, delicious cuisine, and stunning natural beauty, Todos Santos offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
We have learned in our time traveling in Mexico, that to truly experience Todos Santos and its surrounding gems, a rental car is essential. The town’s attractions are spread out, and having your own vehicle allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace. We wanted to be able to visit Todos' swimmable beaches, artisan markets, galleries and some of the off the beaten path restaurants all in a day, making a car the ideal way to venture out.
Our first stop was Pescadero Beach, a stretch of coastline perfect for a morning dip. With its gentle waves and clear waters, it’s an ideal spot for swimming. The beach is relatively quiet, offering a peaceful escape where you can relax and take in the natural beauty. This is in contrast to Cerritos Beach, just a bit further up the road, known as a haven for surfers with it's "shred-friendly" beach breaks. We are not surfers (although I have been know to turn out an excellent boogie board session) so Pescadero was more our particular speed.
After a morning in the sun, we headed back into Todos Santos for some local flavor. The town’s markets are a great place to sample some traditional street food and see the local artists' work on display. We spent quite a while exploring each market stall, enjoying the textiles, leather crafts and even trying on luchador masks to bring home to family and friends.
For lunch, we hopped into the car and drove about 20 minutes out of downtown to a spot that had come highly recommended, The Green Room. Apparently a popular spot among locals and visitors alike. With its vibrant atmosphere set right on the sand and delicious fresh food, it’s a great place to enjoy a leisurely meal. This spot was probably the best meal (And cocktail) of the trip. We learned it was very important to book a reservation, even for lunch. The tables filled very quickly and for good reason! After lunch, we spent some time walking along the sandy beach next to the restaurant and enjoying the views, before laying out our towels and taking in the afternoon oceanside, with books and sunscreen.
Besides its charm and it's beaches, Todos Santos is also known for it's location directly in the path of Humpback whale migrations! Make sure to take advantage of the unique opportunity to spy some whales, especially from December to April. Book a whale-watching tour to witness these magnificent creatures up close. Or do as we did and pack your binoculars to observe the whales right from the comfort of your own beach towel. Watching humpback whales breach and spout is a truly awe-inspiring experience, no matter how close or far you are.
I know, I know... I talk about food a lot, but it's truly one of the highlights of our time in Mexico. Todos Santos is home to many restaurants offering a range of cuisines. After a busy day exploring the markets and beaches, We headed back into downtown this evening to find ourselves a tasty dinner. From upscale eateries to casual cafes, the culinary scene here is both varied and vibrant. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste some local Baja-style seafood or enjoy a refreshing margarita. My favorite is the Ceviche, paired with a passionfruit Marg!
After an exciting day of exploration, we returned to Los Colibris and enjoy a leisurely evening to wind down and enjoy the sunset from our terrace. Whether you choose to stroll through the town’s charming streets, savor a quiet dinner, or simply unwind with a sunset view from the casita, Todos Santos will not disappoint.
Angie was AMAZING in helping us plan our two week, multi-generational trip (for 12 people) to Japan. She really listened to what we wanted and helped plan every detail. One of the best travel specialists I've worked with. Thank you Angie!
