Discovering Sierra de la Laguna: A Full Day Hiking Adventure
Hidden in the heart of Baja California Sur, the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve offers an exhilarating escape for the active and adventurous traveler. This full-day hiking excursion, starting from a local highlands ranch and culminating in beautiful vistas of highlands and sea, was a must-do experience. As one of Baja's most pristine and least explored landscapes, the Sierra de la Laguna is a wonderful contrast to a typical Baja beach day with its rugged and windswept beauty and rich biodiversity.
Our adventure began right at the Casa Colibris in Todos Santos. Our expert guide, Marcelo, picked us up at our casita and whisked us off to the interior dirt roads, winding through canyons and cacti to get to the starting point of our hike. After a brief discussion about water, heat and safety on the trail, we laced up our hiking shoes and set off on a trail that meandered through the enchanting reserve. The path quickly ascended through arid desert scrub and trees, to towering Cardon Cactus and huge Mango groves. The Sierra de la Laguna is not just a geographical marvel but also a biodiversity hotspot. Once part of an island that drifted away from the mainland about 10 million years ago, this region, while appearing to be desert, is home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna, with up to 30% of species endemic to these mountains. As we hiked, Marcelo was sure to point out unique plant species and provide us fascinating information about plant survival in the desert climate.
Since this hike was a private trip for my husband and myself, we were able to ascend at quite a fast pace. Marcelo let us know that he often tailors the speed and distance of the hike to each traveler or group's comfort level. Because of the ascent and the dry heat, the hike was fairly demanding, but definitely rewarding. As we climbed higher, we climbed out of the canyon and into more expansive scenery. The dense, verdant forest slowly gave way to rocky outcrops and panoramic views at the top. We paused frequently to learn about the surrounding plants, particularly the life of cacti n the desert and soak in the scenery. From the summit, we enjoyed vistas that stretch all the way down to the shimmering coastline on both sides of the saddle, creating a stunning contrast between the rugged highlands and the sea far below.
After a couple hours of ascent, we enjoyed lunches that had been prepared for us while taking in the view. After lunch, we descended back towards the ranch. Along the way, we stopped in to visit a highlands basecamp, Camp Cecil de la Sierra, which has beautiful canvas tents set under ancient mango trees, as well as a full traditional outdoor asado and kitchen! I noted this as a place to revisit for my next time in Mexico...
As we finished our descent back to the ranch, the satisfaction of the day's accomplishments was palpable. The Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve is a hidden gem that few have had the privilege to explore. The challenging hike, the awe-inspiring views, and the serene lunch spot combined to create a day of adventure that was as rewarding as it was exhilarating.
This off-the-beaten-path hike in the Sierra de la Laguna is a must. It’s a chance to connect with one of Baja California Sur’s most pristine landscapes, learn a bit more about the Sierra ranching culture, break up your time at the beach and experience the joy of an adventure well done.
Creating a checklist was very beneficial and meeting objectives on certain dates helped as well (to keep my trip organized). The Adventure Travel personnel helped keep me on track which is why my trip was so successful. Communication from both travel agencies (AT/MT) was vital.

This is an amazing company to work with. I generally do not use tour companies as I am more of an independent traveller so I was slightly reticent. They were fantastic from the start - 10/10 - from lining up a phone call to discuss requirements, then their ongoing communication in the lead up to the tour and during it (thank you, Franny and Phen). They also explored cost-effective options (eg group transfers). The tour was in Patagonia so Adventure Life organised a pickup from the El Calafate airport to the El Chalten accommodation, two day hikes with a private guide and then to the El Calafate accommodation. A tour coordinator came to the hotel to explain, using the maps, what was involved in each day tour and what should be expected, and patiently answered all questions. The tour guide Marcos was excellent - very professional, knowledgable, communicative and at all times felt very safe with his navigational skills (important in the Patagonian wilderness). On the second day I forgot to take hiking poles so Marcos kindly gave me his. I honestly wouldn't have changed a thing and would happily recommend and book through them again.

Adventure Life has been great throughout my planning process for our up and coming Galapagos cruise. Kevin Moore, in particular, was very helpful in assisting me in making choices and providing me with options. He was also very patient, as I worked through figuring out what I really wanted in this vacation.
