Kenya Highlights

Visiting Kenya is one of the best ways to see the world's spectacular wildlife! Some of the world's most abundant species can be found in its national parks, reserves, and private conservation areas. See the Great Migration of wildebeest in the Maasai Mara, elephants in Amboseli, and flamingos in Lake Nakuru. Kenya's geographical and cultural variety makes it one of Africa's most popular destinations. Kenya has beaches, mountains, forests, and wildlife-rich savannahs. Here are some of the top tourist attractions not to miss during your Kenya tour.
  • Amboseli National Park. One of Kenya's most famous tourist destinations because of its proximity to Africa's tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. The reserve is a great spot to see elephant herds in Africa. The park is home to lions, cheetahs, giraffes, impalas, elands, waterbucks, gazelles, and more than 600 bird species.
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve. Masai Mara, popularly known as the "Mountain of the Lions," is one of the most spectacular wildlife reserves in Africa, and is located in Kenya, east of Nairobi. The Serengeti's northern extension, the Mara, is a wildlife corridor that connects Tanzania and Kenya.
  • Nairobi. Kenya's largest city, Nairobi, is the country's capital. Visitors come to this region of Kenya because of its rich colonial history, extensive infrastructure, thriving tea and coffee industry, and several nature preserves and reserves.
  • Mount Kenya. Following Kilimanjaro, it is Kenya's highest and second-highest mountain in Africa, and its three highest peaks, Batian Nelion, Lenana, and Ngorongoro, are named for Masai chiefs.
  • Tsavo West National Park. Tsavo West and East are Kenya's largest parks. These parks feature rivers, waterfalls, savannah, volcanic hills, a vast lava-rock plateau, and a diverse array of fauna. Tsavo East, located halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa, is known for its photogenic elephant herds rolling and soaking in red dust. With more rain and a greater variety of terrain, Tsavo West has some of the park's most stunning vistas up north.
  • Lake Nakuru. Lake Nakuru National Park is noted for its pink flamingos. Birds flock to Lake Nakuru, one of the Rift Valley soda lakes that comprises a third of the park. The park was founded in 1961 and has around 450 bird species and other fauna.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

From July to September, during the country's dry season and the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, is one of the best times to visit Kenya. However, a rainy-season visit between mid-March and June and again between October and December is highly recommended to escape the peak-season crowds and to take advantage of lower, off-season rates for lodging and activities.

How much does a Kenya Safari cost?

The cost of a Kenya safari ranges from $3,998 for an 11-day tour of the country's attractions to $10,820 for a 10-day luxury excursion. To search for wildlife, visit Amboseli National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park, and the famous Maasai Mara.
