Its unique geographic position made the island vulnerable to attacks, while also making it a meeting place of Mediterranean civilizations, a bridge between the East and West. Situated at the foot of Mt. Etna, Taormina embodies the essence of Sicily.

Located on Italy’s heel, where the Faro Della Palascia lighthouse marks the country’s eastern-most point, Otranto is known for its seafront cafés and sandy beaches. Its history, however, is one of the invasions. While the city’s 11th-century cathedral is renowned for its mosaics, it’s also where 800 souls escaped a Turkish invasion in 1480. Refusing to renounce their Christian faith for Islam, they died within the cathedral walls. A 1771 Papal decree beatified them as the Blessed Martyrs of Otranto.

Few places in the world boast such clear architectural accounts of their full histories as does UNESCO-listed Kotor and its bay.
