Ocean Fishing & Relaxing in Montericco

Jerry and Carmalita
Jerry and Carmalita
Guatemala is known for its ocean fishing and my partner is an avid fisherman. Unfortunately, there weren't enough knowledgeable decision-makers planning this trip (myself included) and it showed by the end of the day.

Most fishing operators in Guatemala require you to stay at their resorts, paying easily $3-7K per person for a few days of accommodations and fishing. Being on a budget, this wasn't going to be an option for me so we did the best we could, looking for an outfitter that would take us out for a day (and at a more reasonable price).

We paid for this in lack of quality for sure. The guide didn't seem too keen on actually fishing and not only did we not catch anything but also didn't get that friendly Guatemalan companionship on the boat that we'd had leading up to this. Nonetheless, I had my first real experience on a boat in the ocean and we did see lots of dolphins and a humpback whale, not a complete bust!  Next time, however, we will be forking over the funds to really experience Guatemala's ocean fishing.

The next three days were spent sleeping, lounging, sun-tanning, a few (or more) drinks, and walking on the beach. Living in land-locked Idaho this was a wonderful way to wrap up our Guatemala experience and breathe in the last few days of vacation.

Guatemala was a wonderful experience and though Asia continues to be the nearest to my heart, I’m so grateful we had the opportunity. Mucho Gusto, Guatemala!
