Day 1: The Real Town Tour

The town of Barrio Lujan is just 5 minutes outside of San Jose. This cultural tour takes you into the heart of the city and lets you experience the daily lives of local Costa Rican people - their homes, their markets, and their spirit that makes Costa Rica such a spectacular place to travel. This tour with your bilingual guide is approximately 1.5 hours, depending on group size. Visit a variety of sites in Barrio Lujan - pick and choose from your favorites from the list below!

School - Visit the 70-year-old schoolhouse. Talk with the children and teachers and learn more about the Costa Rican classroom.

One Hundred Year Old House - Marvel at the region's historic architecture, and get a glance into the daily lives of a Costa Rican family.

Cookie Factory - Let Mercedes tell you the story of how her mother made her famous Costa Rican cookies from a wooden stove, and be sure to sample the goods!

The Pulperia - At this typical "little market," meet Nena, who will tell you about her products, sing you a song, and offer blessings of good health and safe travel.

The Bazar - Do a little shopping here. Pick up some souvenirs for friends and family from this local knick-knack market.

El Blacksmith - Share a haunting story with the local blacksmith, of the local legion of the ghost woman who haunts the shop at night.

Local Restaurant - Get a taste of local Costa Rica at the restaurant, La Nurtivia.

Vegetable Store - As soon as you get to know Maria, you will never be the same. Her simple happiness, perspective on life - not to mention her delicious fresh fruits - is sure to be a highlight of your Costa Rica trip.

La Bread Store - Learn about a variety of Costa Rican breads from the Quesadilla to the love-nest bread. And don't forget about the samples!

The Cantina - Share a story, a laugh, and a drink with the local Costa Ricans at the El Piloto cantina.

Avalon Café - At this local café, experience first hand - or cup - what makes Costa Rican coffee so popular.

*If you would like lunch at Barrio Lujan's Dino Sandwich or coffee and a pastry at Avalon Café, please include an additional $4 in the cost. Maximum of 16 travelers per group.

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.
