About Tortuguero
Tortuguero National Park has 11 ecological habitats, from high rainforest to lowland marshes. In front of the ocean is a seemingly endless beach. Behind it is a narrow lagoon, connected to the sea at one end and fed by a river at the other, that runs parallel to the beach for its entire 35 km length. Beyond the lagoon is a coastal rainforest, crisscrossed by an infinite maze of serpentine canals and streams fed by rivers flowing down from the central mountain ranges and by the rains that fall in the area. On the periphery of the forest is a complex of swamps.
