Fjords of Tierra del Fuego Cruise aboard Stella Australis - Excursions
The excursions included in the Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise are conducted in small groups, guided by the expedition staff, and include either landing or zodiac cruising. Every day there is a briefing where you receive the information on the options for the next day, depending on the specific weather conditions of the day.
With the lower difficulty excursions you tend to have more time for photographs, and there is higher educational content.
The higher difficulty options usually provides less chances to take photographs, at a faster pace, more focussed on the hike.
On Day 2 of the cruise we had our first stop during the morning at Ainsworth Bay, where two excursions are offered, the forest or the moraine excursion. Both offer views of the Almirantazgo Sound and Darwin Mountain Range.
The Forrest excursion is a low difficulty tour that starts at the beach upon arrival to the bay, and follows a trail into the forest. It provides the opportunity to learn about the evolution of vegetation after glacier recession and the wildlife.
During the afternoon we all have the chance to participate on an expedition by zodiac to Tuckers Islets. It was a great close-up look at the amazing diversity of birds that inhabit these islets and their neighboring rock formations. We were meant to see mainly cormorants, however we were happy to see that there were still many Magellanic penguins in the area.
For Day 3 we have the choice of three different excursions to Pia Glacier: Coastal Excursion (a low difficulty activity covering 0,4 miles), Lookout Excursion (medium difficulty and 1 mile hike) and Boulders Excursion (high difficulty with 1,8 mile hike). The last 2 activities were leading to lookouts that offered panoramic views of this imposing glacier.
The next day, we had an early morning start to visit Cape Horn, but the visit was cut short due to the forecast of high winds.. We had 1 hour to walk on a designated track, up to the the Cape Horn Monument depicting an albatross in flight—the seafaring symbol for souls lost at sea.
Our last excursion was a visit to Wulaia Bay during the afternoon, where we chose to have a longer hike with the Forrest Lookout Excursion (medium difficulty, 1.5 mile hike) that provided the most beautiful view of the bay with an incoming storm.
The low difficulty option was the Beach Coast Excursion (0.9 miles mile) focussing on the history of the place, and the high difficulty was the Summit Excursion (2.7 mile hike).
Overall, the excursions provide a spectacular opportunity to enjoy the landscape and wildlife of Patagonia in remote locations only accessible by sea.
We were referred by a satisfied client and the booking of the trip was everything we wanted to do, and they listened to the types of hotels, sightseeing, etc. we wanted to do.

Rapa Nui was on my bucket list for a long time so I worried that it would not meet my expectations. Our tour could not have been better. Our guide was knowledgeable and professional with an understanding of the island that made it come alive. I would and have recommended this trip to everyone that will listen.

Mary Curry is the BEST! I have worked with her for multiple family trips for over 10 years, and she is responsive, works within your preferences and budget, has great suggestions and has personal travel experience at many of the locations. We prefer active family vacations and Adventure Life and Mary Curry make sure that is what we get!

My tour operator was helpful. Unfortunately she was unable to get my single-supplement canceled. Not too many tours charge for that anymore and I almost canceled my trip because of that.

Excellent communication and coordination for our proposed trip. It couldn't have been smoother, and any question we did have was rapidly addressed. It has made the whole process nearly seamless.
