As sensual and exotic as the hibiscus flower that bears its name, Bungaraya Island Resort is a luxurious jewel set on a coral reef island just off the coast of Borneo. A secluded island hideaway of 48 timbered villas, the resort is tucked away on a tranquil and hidden bay framed by a crescent-shaped white sand beach on one side and centuries-old virgin jungle on the other. Each private villa is rough-hewn and hand-crafted by local tradesmen, terraced into the hillside reflecting the traditional simplicity of the Borneo architectural style and blending seamlessly with the comforts and needs of the most sophisticated and discerning luxury traveler.

Unwind in a tropical paradise at Bungaraya Island Resort, a luxury getaway perched on the hillsides of Polish Bay on Gaya Island off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia Borneo. Cocooned in pristine rainforest, this award-winning, secluded resort features 48 timber villas in traditional Bornean architecture overlooking a beautiful, white-sand beach. Like the alluring hibiscus flower that bears its name, the resort astounds at every turn – whether you’re lazing on the beach, relaxing at the hilltop spa, sampling local and international cuisine, or savoring a tipple at the renowned underground wine cellar.

Recreational Activities

Make your stay with us just that much more unforgettable by taking part in these exciting activities offered at Bungaraya Island Resort.

Rainforest Discovery
Explore the island’s lush tropical jungle with a trek on any of the different trails of varying lengths. An interesting one takes you from Bungaraya Island Resort all the way to the bungaraya Marine Resort on the other side of the island, a trek that will take at least four hours. See the breathtaking view from the treetops by doing the complimentary canopy walk, which circles around four dipterocarp hardwood trees. For an exhilarating rush, go on the zip line which is just located nearby the canopy walk.

Zip Line
There’s more than one way to enjoy the jungle, and a ride on the flying fox is an exhilarating way to do so. The zip line begins at a height of 50m above ground level and makes three stops as it descends to the forest floor. For children, there are smaller-scale zip lines at lower elevations.

Canopy Walk
Imagine being high among the trees, and the awe-inspiring sceneries that would afford. Go for the complimentary canopy walk to discover for yourself and experience the rainforest from a whole new perspective.

Sea Adventures
Take to the warm azure waters in a kayak or paddleboard, or learn what it takes to be a sailor with a sailing lesson. Discover undersea wonders of the South China Sea with a snorkeling session or two.

Nautilus Sunset Cruise
The sun’s slow descent into the horizon is a sight to behold, a blazing vista awash in waning crimsons and twilight hues. Soak in this glorious spectacle on our sunset cruise while enjoying a tipple of your choice.

There are also options where clients can choose to do overnight tours to the Kinabatangan River as an Overnight tour (Sandakan, East Coast of Sabah), an opportunity to Sabah’s wildlife.

Kelias River Cruise
South of Kota Kinabalu and near the town of Beaufort, the Klias wetlands is an eco-destination sure to intrigue nature lovers. The lush mangrove forest reserve teems with creatures big and small, the most famous of them being the infamous probosci's monkey, Borneo’s largest primate distinguished by its pendulous nose, big round belly and light golden brown fur coat. In addition to having the largest proboscis monkey population, the wetlands are also home to macaques and the rare silvery langur monkey. One could even spot crocodiles, monitor lizards, tree snakes and all kinds of birds. When night falls, the forest comes alive with luminous fireflies.

Kinabalu Park National Park and Poring Hot Spring
Malaysia’s first Unesco World Heritage Site is Kinabalu Park in Kundasang, about 90km from the city of Kota Kinabalu. Within this park, which spans more than 75,000ha, stands Borneo and Malaysia’s highest peak, the majestic Mt Kinabalu, visible on clear days from anywhere in the park. A wide range of habitat features here, from rich tropical lowland and hill rainforest to tropical mountain forest, sub-alpine forest and shrub on the higher elevations. The park has also been designated a Centre of Plant Diversity for Southeast Asia, as it is exceptionally rich in species with examples of flora from the Himalayas, China, Australia, Malaysia, as well as pan-tropical flora. Visitors come here to enjoy the cool mountain air and feast their eyes on breathtaking views of valleys and mountain range – it is truly a sight for sore eyes. A trip here is sure to refresh soul and spirit.

Sepilok Orang Utan and Labuk Bay
The Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary offers another perfect Proboscis monkeys observation spot for any tourist who wants to have a closer look at these very special monkeys especially those who do not have the time to travel too far away to watch them. The Sanctuary is located at the center of the mangrove forest along with the coastal land near Samawang Village in Labuk Bay, Sandakan, Sabah. From the airport, it is 38km away and takes about an hour to get there. Part of the trip will be through the graveled roads through plantation estates.

Sandakan Safari Adventure
Pick-up from hotel lobby/resort lounge and send to Kota Kinabalu Airport for your flight (recommended ETD 0700hrs). On arrival at Sandakan Airport, you will be met by a guide and proceed to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. We proceed to watch a video show about the plight of the Orang Utans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the Orang Utans at 1000hrs, and then we continue to the newly completed enclosed nursery area for young Orang Utans. Thereafter visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the conservation of the world’s smallest bear.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.
