Departing from Chituca Mountain Lodge, the first stop is San Pedro de Quemes, where visitors can view the remains of the burned town from above. The journey then continues to Jawincha Valley, where a hike follows an ancient trail once used by local inhabitants. The route also includes a visit to the cemetery, featuring a museum and historical tombs.

The hike begins in the hidden village of Ikala, leading into Jawincha Valley. Along the way, travelers pass through old shepherds’ settlements, refuges, and quinoa fields. The route also features a stop at an archaeological site with petroglyphs and pictographs, remnants of ancient Andean cultures.

HIGH MOUNTAIN
Irruputunku Volcano
Duration: 5 hrs | Distance: 5.5 km (3.4 mi) | Difficulty: Advanced
The ascent follows a marked trail on the volcano’s south face, circling the crater before reaching the north side of the rock. From the summit, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Altiplano and observe a yellow fumarole, created by high sulfur concentrations. Along the way, a quenoa forest—one of the fastest-growing trees in the world—adds to the unique landscape.
