Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker can be accessed via water taxi or small plane. While we have taken the water taxi previously and would recommend it to anyone wanting a budget friendly option, this time we opted for the flight to save on time. These flights are operated by Tropic Air and Maya Island Air - Adventure Life typically utilizes Tropic Air as they have a slightly more robust fleet and flight times. Connecting to the domestic departure is easy after passing through customs, and once buckled into your seat, it takes about 10-15 minutes to reach your island destination.
These planes are quite small, with typically 10-14 guests. The crew will assign passengers to specific seats at boarding time in order to distribute the weight as evenly as possible. Turbulence in these small planes is not for the faint of heart, but the views sure are pretty!
The water taxi alternative is a great option for those who want to skip the small plane experience. Expect a 30 minute taxi from the international airport to the water taxi terminal, followed by 45 minutes out to Caye Caulker or 1.5 hours out to San Pedro. The cost is typically around 25% of the flight.
Jess was so helpful in talking me through some of the trip options I'd told her I was interested in, and then also bringing up similar alternatives with more flexible dates. Now that everything is booked I realize all the extra things she figured out for us as well, besides booking the transfers from and to each location, she realized that we wouldn't make it to my desired flight time on three departure date and was able to easily add another day so that even our departure day is stress free!

The trip planner understood what we wanted to do and see, and found what we hope to be a great match for our interests and style of travel.

Basically everything. The transfers from lodge to lodge were all timely and smooth (even though we arrived 3 hours late!) with great drivers. The lodges and food were all top notch. The guides were excellent and very knowledgeable about local history and wildlife. Chaa lodge stands out as exceptional. I ended up with an infection leaving Chaa, but they arranged for driver to stop at doctor, and he even got us to a pharmacy for prescription and a great drive to coast.
