Horn Island is 33 mi2 with a population of 650. With many modern facilities, this island has a rich history including gold mining and a role in World War II, as the closest advanced operational airbase to New Guinea was built here in 1940. Approximately 5000 soldiers served on the island during the war, which was bombed eight times by the Japanese.
