Day 1: Longyearbyen | Embark

Nestled in a valley along the serene shores of Adventfjord, Longyearbyen is surrounded by towering mountains and glistening glaciers. Despite having only about 25 miles of roads, this Arctic village is divided into distinct neighborhoods, including the town center and Nybyen ("New Town"), where post-war miners' barracks now house cozy guesthouses, a restaurant, and a gallery—all set against the stunning backdrop of Hiorthfjellet, a prominent local peak.

For a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history and culture, stop by the Svalbard Museum before setting off on thrilling adventures like summer dogsledding or cruising to the eerie, abandoned Russian settlement of Pyramiden.

Day 2: Ny-Alesund | Exploring Svalbard - Captain’s Choice

Ny-Ålesund, the northernmost settlement on Svalbard, is home to just about 12 residents and an international scientific research station. Nearby, rare geese and Arctic terns nest in a protected breeding ground, offering a glimpse into the region’s delicate ecosystem. A short cruise away, the breathtaking Ossian Sars Nature Reserve showcases rugged mountains and lush Arctic vegetation, a striking contrast in this remote landscape.

Even in one of the most isolated corners of the Arctic, history comes alive through tales of pioneering explorers. Each day, your expedition leaders, along with the captain and onboard pilot, will assess conditions to select the best landing sites for immersive exploration. The Svalbard archipelago teems with wildlife, from puffins and reindeer to Arctic foxes and terns. An expert photographer will be on hand to help capture unforgettable shots—especially if the elusive polar bear makes an appearance.

As you embark on thrilling Zodiac cruises past towering glaciers, keep a watchful eye on the water for glimpses of whale fins breaking the surface.

Adding to the adventure, Captain’s Choice ports of call provide an element of surprise. Your ship’s captain will expertly navigate shifting weather conditions to bring you to the most rewarding wildlife-viewing locations, ensuring an unforgettable Arctic experience.

Day 3-8: Exploring Svalbard - Captain’s Choice

Even in one of the most isolated regions of the Arctic, there is still the captivating history of a pioneering past. Expedition leaders, along with the captain and onboard pilot, will determine possible landings each day for all-out explorations. Wildlife abounds throughout the archipelago of Svalbard, such as puffins, reindeer, Arctic terns, and foxes. An expert photographer will help you look out for the perfect photo opportunity of these animals, but especially for the elusive polar bear. As Zodiac cruises may bring you closer to glaciers, keep your eyes on the water for whale fins.

CAPTAIN’S CHOICE — Your Captain will expertly navigate ice floes, icebergs, and changing sea and weather conditions to ensure you experience the most from your expedition. Each day is a new adventure filled with a spontaneous sense of exploration as your Captain works with the expedition team to determine possible shore landings and Zodiac safaris. All itinerary routes serve as examples and are subject to change based on current conditions, prioritizing the safety and optimal expedition experience for all guests.
