It's a right of passage in the polar regions. Taking that chilling dip marks you as a true explorer. The trick is to get down there, make your leap and hurry back up for a hot shower!
It was so cool to have 72 of 93 guests take the polar plunge on our cruise, one person even went twice! Doing something outside your comfort zone is such a vital part of awesome travel experiences and for most of us, willingly jumping into below freezing water is waaaaay outside the comfort zone.
Luckily the staff has the process down to a T. Enzo and Pablo helped get us each into a harness so we were tethered to the ship so we couldn't float too far. Enzo and Pablo also helped haul each and every person out of the water - turns out its hard to get your limbs to cooperate after that shock. Vero, our photography guide, made sure everyone got a video of their leap and we had one guide out in a support boat just in case. As the second person in the water the whole ordeal was probably less than a minute. The people I did feel sorry for were those standing in their swimsuits waiting in line! Nothing like a cool breeze to get you excited about subzero temp waters! Seriously, get down there right away and be first in. You'll thank me.
A shot of vodka and a hot shower later I enjoyed the rest of the show from an upper deck. It felt like everyone was bonded just a little more after our leap - it was the perfect time for a big group photo and special mulled wine that the crew brought out.
