Galapagos Wildlife

Observing wildlife while you travel in the Galapagos is more rewarding if you keep track of the wildlife you see. This checklist offers a handy way of doing so, and it even mentions the probability of sighting each species!

Species Type and Abundance
· Endemic (found only in Galápagos)
·S Endemic Subspecies (Species exists in other parts of the world, but no interbreeding with the Galapagos  population. The Galapagos population may evolve into a distinct species.)
R Resident (breeds in Galápagos and elsewhere)
M Migrant (returns yearly to Galápagos)
I Introduced (introduced by humans)
a Abundant (Well established and widespread in Galápagos. Quite easy to find in its habitat)
c Common: (Easy to find if you know where and when to look)
Uncommon: (Some effort required to find. You need to know when and where to look and have some luck)
r Restriced/Rare: (Very restricted range or very few in number. Plenty of luck needed to find. Knowing when and where to look is essential)
