The Tortuguero area is called the "Amazon of Costa Rica" because access is only by boat on winding jungle rivers. Turtle Beach Lodge, located just north of the town of Tortuguero in the Tortuguero National Park, is a secluded 175-acre resort. Surrounded by lush jungle with miles of trails, a meandering private canal, and a half mile of private beach on the Caribbean Sea, it is the ultimate in seclusion, tropical beauty, and exotic adventure for a Costa Rica tour. Whether you are looking for adventure, relaxation, or a combination of both, the unique location and diversity of Turtle Beach Lodge provides an unforgettable experience for all.

Rooms
Turtle Beach's airy bungalows feature comfortable beds, ceiling fans, cool tiled floors, private baths with hot showers, and wide, screened windows that let in gentle ocean breezes and melodic sounds from the jungle. Standard rooms are available with one double bed, two twins, or one double and one twin. Larger rooms are available for family groups.

Meals
The chef and staff combine local and international cuisine with fresh juices, fruits and vegetables to create a mouth-watering buffet three times daily. There is always enough to choose from and even the pickiest eaters never go hungry.

Relax after your jungle explorations in a thatched roof bar with your favorite mixed drink, a local beer, or a glass of wine. You can shoot a game of pool, play cards or a game of checkers or chess. Share in lively conversation with your fellow travelers from around the world as you eat dinner in a spacious open-air restaurant. Or, you can dine in romantic solitude with only the sound of the ocean's waves.

The Pool
The uniquely designed pool complex at Turtle Beach Lodge features a shady, thatched hut with hammocks overlooking a large turtle-shaped pool, both conveniently situated near the restaurant and bar. The pool is kept sparkling with an environmentally friendly salt filter, which is good for skin and hair.

Grounds
The lodge grounds practically explode with a breathtaking array of colorful flowers and plants, as well as a culinary and medicinal herb garden with plants native to Costa Rica. You will enjoy plentiful fruit trees such as lemon, papaya, mango, banana, avocado, and of course coconut palms. Ask your guide or a gardener to open a coconut with his machete and let you drink the sweet water or taste the delicious coconut flesh. Better yet, take a guided garden tour to learn all about the plants and flowers and local practices. You can also kayak in the canal bordering the property.

About Tortuguero
Tortuguero is home to an incredible variety of biodiversity thanks to its 11 different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches and lagoons. The beaches are an important nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, including hawksbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles. Manatees, caimans, and crocodiles live in the canals, and the jungle is home to endangered jaguars, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced capuchin), sloths, and more. Basilisk lizards and tree frogs inhabit the area, along with 375 species of birds. There are more than 400 species of trees and about 2,200 species of plants.

Turtle Beach Lodge Community Work
Turtle Beach Lodge proudly supports local organizations, including COTERC to support turtle research and their museum. They also support Global Vision International volunteers who work on community projects such as improving local schools, donating musical instruments, and forming a children's dance troupe. The lodge makes regular donations to the police station and school in Tortuguero Village. Arrangements can be made in advance if you would like to combine your vacation with volunteer opportunities.

Lodge Activities
Remarkable adventures await you at Turtle Beach Lodge. It is the only hotel in the area that is actually inside Tortuguero National Park, and the only one that offers beach access, as well as rainforest and canals. There is always something exciting to see or do on their 175-acre property! Stroll along the Caribbean Sea, fish in the surf or canal, explore acres of pristine jungle, swim in the pool, relax in the hammock hut or bar and games area, or kayak the adjacent Canal of Palms -- all without leaving the property.

Guided Tours

Garden Tour:
The Garden Tour allows you to explore the plants and flowers grown in the gardens of Turtle Beach Lodge. From exploring the medicinal garden to learn about the local use of medicinal plants to learning how Turtle Beach Lodge contributes to the health and conservation of the sea turtle population, you will leave the garden tour with a new appreciation and enjoyment of Costa Rica's lush plants and the lodge's gardens.

Day and Night Jungle Tours:
Consider taking both of these exciting tours during your stay, as the jungle is completely different at night than it is during the day. Guides will explain the trails, how the jungle environment works, help you spot wildlife, and give you safety tips for exploring the jungle on your own.

Tortuguero National Park and Canal of Palms Boat Tour:
The black water in the lodge's private canal, the Canal of Palms, and throughout Tortuguero National Park, is caused by the tannins from certain trees that grow in the area. The water in the canal flows slowly, creating a dramatic reflection of the lush foliage that is constantly changing. This is a slow paced tour with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, spot wildlife, and reflect on the magic of the unique waterways. The sights and sounds vary from day to day, but typically the wildlife is active in the early morning, while a sunny afternoon is perfect for finding freshwater turtles, caimans, and lizards sunning themselves on logs along the canal banks. There is an additional charge of $10.00 per person to enter Tortuguero National Park.

Turtle Watching Season:
Atlantic Green Sea Turtles have been coming to the Caribbean beaches of Tortuguero to lay their eggs for centuries. Much has been studied and written about them. When the baby turtles grow to adulthood, they return to the same beach where they were hatched. At Turtle Beach Lodge you have the unique opportunity to witness these magical events! During the peak season from June to early October, we offer nightly turtle watching tours right from our own beach.

Tortuguero Town Tour:
The town of Tortuguero has a very simple way of life. Laundry is done by hand and hung on trees, bushes, and occasionally a clothesline. With the frequency of rain showers, it sometimes hangs there for days. There are no cars, and as you walk through the town, you will see children playing like anywhere else in the world. There are a few shops and restaurants in Tortuguero and you can walk on the small paths between the houses. These paths are the streets of the town. To venture down them is to discover the rustic charm of another time.

Optional Tours

Guided Tortuguero Mountain Tour:
Tortuguero Mountain is the remains of an ancient volcano, which is why the beaches are black volcanic sand. The climb up the mountain is strenuous, but your guide will go at a pace that accommodates the entire group. Along the way, your guide will point out many plants and animals that you might otherwise miss. There are often groups of monkeys and many species of birds near the top of the mountain. At the top you will have an interesting view of the jungle canals, the town of Tortuguero and the Caribbean in the panorama below.

Jungle Canopy Tour:
A fun adventure for the whole family, Tortuguero Canopy has eleven platforms, seven zip-lines, and four hanging bridges. The tour lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours, and the equipment and safety regulations are certified by the Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT).

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.
