South Georgia became a territory separate from the Falkland Islands Dependency in 1985. It is administered by the Governor of the Falkland Islands, who is the commissioner to exercise power for the Queen. There are no permanent residents on the island, and so there is no need for a legislature. There is an Executive Officer who works on administration matters, and the Director of the SGSSI Fisheries who deals with fishing licenses.
